Sustainability in Motorsport Racing

The motorsport industry is renowned for being fast paced, competitive and exciting bringing in millions of viewers worldwide. Unsurprisingly, however, the traditional view of motorsports is a male dominated fuel guzzling industry. This is highlighted by the FIA’s (motorsport governing body) huge 2019 carbon footprint, of 18,910 tonnes of CO2e.

Despite this, as different sports in the industry develop there is a clear trend towards remedying this and acting with accountability.

How are these changes reshaping the future of racing, and what does it mean for the environment and the fans who love the sport?

Are electric vehicles the future of racing?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are making waves in the racing world, mainly through the innovative and rapidly growing Formula E series. As a testament to the potential of electric racing, Formula E  has emerged as a frontrunner in promoting sustainability while delivering high-octane excitement on the track.

Formula E: Leading the way

In the 2023 Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sports (GSBS), Formula E distinguished itself as the top performer in sustainability, achieving an impressive 81%, compared to the industry average of 47%.

Since its inception, Formula E’s mission has been to showcase some of the world’s best drivers competing on premier tracks using fully electric vehicles. The series has maintained a net-zero carbon footprint since its debut, becoming the first sport to be certified for such an achievement.

Formula E’s dedication to sustainability extends to its alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative, committing to reducing their energy consumption by 45% by 2030. This commitment is certified under the PAS 2060 Standard, reinforcing its leading position in global elite sports and sustainability. Julia Pallé, the Director of Sustainability, emphasises the rigorous certification process ensuring the accuracy and integrity of their targets.

The series’ slogan, “sustainable, competitive, unpredictable,” encapsulates its ethos. Formula E serves as a proving ground for new technologies, driving innovations that can be integrated into commercial electric vehicles.

Furthermore, Formula E is actively working to increase gender equality in motorsport through initiatives like ‘FIA Girls on Track.’ This program aims to boost the percentage of girls aged 8-18 engaged in the industry by offering them opportunities to experience different facets of motorsport, fostering a more inclusive future for racing.

Alternative sustainable racing series

  • Extreme E: Takes sustainable racing to some of the world’s most remote and environmentally at risk locations. By racing in these unique and fragile ecosystems, Extreme E aims to raise awareness about climate change and promote the use of electric vehicles. The series features all-electric SUVs and highlights issues such as deforestation, melting ice caps, desertification, and rising sea levels.
  • MotoE: As a part of the MotoGP World Championship, MotoE showcases the capabilities of electric motorcycles on some of the world’s most renowned circuits. The series promotes the development and adoption of electric two-wheelers, which are a crucial component of sustainable urban mobility.
  • E1 Series: Featuring electric powerboats with the aim to address the environmental impact of traditional powerboat racing, often involving high emissions and fuel consumption. By showcasing electric alternatives, E1 promotes cleaner waterways and the development of sustainable marine technologies. The series also emphasises the importance of preserving aquatic ecosystems and reducing water pollution.

P1 Fuels: Will they transform the racing industry?

P1 Fuels are 100% fossil-free, with 80% less carbon emissions compared to traditional fuels. P1  can now legally be sold at fuel stations across the USA, UK, and Europe, and match the power of regular gasoline.

P1 Fuels’ innovative approach involves creating high-performance, sustainable fuel options for both racing and everyday use. Their products are designed to deliver the same level of performance as traditional petrol. Making them an attractive option for motorsport teams looking to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing competitive edge.

Car Magazine conducted a test, using a Mazda MX-5 in a race, comparing the output of P1 and fossil fuels. They found that P1 Fuels performed ‘brilliantly’, with overall output matching ‘normal’ fuels.

The major challenge of P1 Fuels is the cost, which is currently 3 times higher than unleaded petrol. With scaling, however, prices are predicted to reduce to comparable levels within the next three years, making it more accessible for broader use.

P1 Fuels are undergoing continuous research and development, enhancing their formulation and scaling up production. This includes optimising their blend of renewable sources and improving production efficiency.

The transition to widespread use of sustainable fuels and electric vehicles requires significant infrastructure development and investment. Yet, P1 Fuels is committed to overcoming these challenges by partnering with key stakeholders in the automotive and energy sectors.

Nico Rosberg: Sustainable solutions in racing and beyond

Nico Rosberg, the 2016 Formula 1 World Champion, has become a leading advocate for sustainability in motorsports. Since retiring from racing, Rosberg has focused on promoting eco-friendly practices and technologies through various initiatives and investments.

Rosberg founded the Greentech Festival, an annual event showcasing cutting-edge green technologies and innovations. This festival gathers industry leaders and enthusiasts to discuss and demonstrate solutions for a sustainable future.

Their aim? To inspire the adoption of green technologies across all sectors, including motorsports.

Is Formula One moving towards a sustainable future?

Formula One, traditionally known for its high-speed, fuel-intensive racing, is now steering towards a more sustainable future. Recognizing its significant carbon footprint, the sport has committed to achieving net zero by 2030.

A key part of this initiative is developing a 100% sustainable fuel for the next generation of Formula One cars. This fuel aims to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining the sport’s high-performance standards. The transition to sustainable fuel is a critical step in minimising racing’s environmental impact.

Formula One is also enhancing logistical and operational efficiency. By investing in sustainable transportation and optimising freight routes, the sport aims to cut down on carbon emissions from global travel. More efficient vehicles and alternative transportation methods are part of this strategy.

Formula One also promotes environmental awareness and sustainable practices among its teams, partners, and fans. These initiatives include:

  • Reduce single-use plastics
  • Boost recycling
  • Improve energy efficiency at race events

By fostering a culture of sustainability, Formula One sets a powerful example for the motorsport community.

Formula One’s ambitious goals reflect a significant shift in priorities, showing that even the most fuel-dependent activities can evolve towards a greener future.

How does sustainability improve the fan experience?

Sustainability in motorsports not only addresses environmental concerns but also enhances the fan experience in various meaningful ways.

Here are some key efforts:

  • Merchandise: Teams and organisers can offer products made from recycled or organic materials. For instance, Formula E’s sustainability report highlights the use of merchandise made from recycled plastics, reducing waste and promoting responsible consumption.
  • Green Travel: Motorsport UK’s strategy includes providing sustainable travel options for fans, including EV charging points at events, promoting carpooling initiatives, and integrating shuttle services.
  • Food and Beverage: Offer options that are locally sourced and sustainably produced. At various motorsport events efforts are made to provide organic and plant-based food choices while reducing food waste through composting.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Events: Engage fans in CSR activities, such as community support and environmental advocacy. Motorsport UK’s strategy includes community outreach and volunteer programs that allow fans to contribute to local and environmental causes linked to motorsport events.
  • Digital Innovation and Engagement: Using digital platforms can enhance fan engagement with sustainability. Formula E’s app, for example, provides real-time updates on sustainable practices at events and gamifies eco-friendly actions, encouraging fans to participate in recycling and energy-saving activities.

As motorsports continue to embrace sustainable practices, the future of racing looks promising for both the environment and its passionate fans. These initiatives not only aim to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint but also ensure the excitement of racing continues for generations to come.
